If ever you wanted to grow a flower that is low maintenance, happily blooms and has a full range of colors, go with dahlias. Not the little bedding kinds, but make the effort, buy the tubers and dig them a few inches down under the soil. You will be amazed.
Dahlias do appreciate as much sun as possible. We have been watering ours occasionally during the dry spells this summer, but no more than any other flowers and veggies.
The bud below is actually a deep purple in person. You don’t see that color very often.
We just happened to clump most of our dahlia tubers into one bed this year. In a matter of a few short weeks, some grew as tall as I am. That’s a bog pot of basil in the front for our winter supply of pesto.
