Spotlight On: BAYarts and Cleveland Art ClassesApril 28th, 2012 Posted in Art, Classes, Galleries/Museums/Exhibits, Painting/Decorative Arts, West Side
Over on the far West side of town, BAYarts is a not for profit organization and community center for arts events and education. Founded in 1948 as Baycrafters, BAYarts has really come into its own during the past decade. BAYarts actually combines the Gallery House and the Irene Fuller House. Next door are Vento Trattoria, the Red Caboose, The Huntington Playhouse and Lake Erie Nature & Science Center, with Huntington Beach a quick walk across the street.
BAYarts is a dynamic center with Cleveland art classes for young children to adults. The kids can attend campART, offered throughout the summer months. Adults may take art classes ranging from every media of art to jewelry, photography, fiber and pottery.
The Gallery House was the original main gallery, with classrooms, a pottery studio and administrative offices. It also houses the Gallery Shop, full of hand-crafted, one-of-a kind works by regional artists of all disciplines. The staff at BAYarts’ passion and commitment to the center fills the air with energy. One can just tell it is a place of life and fun.
The Irene Fuller House certainly has a unique history. It actually stood on the shores of Lake Erie for decades, attracting fame as the home where the famous Dr. Sam Sheppard was arrested while visiting his parents at their summer retreat. It was literally floated down the Lake Erie shore in 1984 and donated to the center. Its long-awaited restoration finally began in the spring of 2010 and was recently completed. It now houses gallery shows, classes, concerts and a café run by Mojo’s Coffees.
April seems to be the month of exhibits of children’s art in the Cleveland area, as BAYarts is hosting Scapes, a juried art show with 24 schools represented, until May 4th.
Here are a few of the works on display:
